state the location and function of different types of meristems
Hello,
A meristem is the tissue in most plants containing undifferentiated cells, found in zones of the plant where growth can take place. Meristematic cells give rise to various organs of a plant and are responsible for growth.
There are three types of Meristems:
1. Apical Meristem
2. Intercalary Meristem
3. Lateral Meristem
The location and functions of the meristems are:
1. Apical Meristem:
It is a growth region in plants located within the root tips. Apical meristem is crucial in extending both access to nutrients and water via the roots and access to light energy via the leaves. It is useful in the elongation of the stem and formation of new leaves.
2. Intercalary Meristem:
It is present between the masses of mature tissues present at the bases of the leaves of grasses. It apperas in the initial stage of plants and hence known as primary meristem. It is useful for the regeneration of the grasses.
3. Lateral Merristem:
It appears in matured tissues of roots and shroots. It appears in plant's later life and hence known as secondary meristems. It helps in increasing growth of the plants.
Best Wishes.
