There is a permanent commission and short service commission, recruitment will depend upon which service you are thinking to join. Recently women were allowed to join permanent commission as well.

The ways you can join Naval forces are :-
- Upsc entry:- upsc hold examination twice a year for admitting candidates into permanent commission. Their are two exams choice. The NDA (National Defense Academy)/INA (Indian Naval Academy) entry for 12th standard candidates (or pass outs) with Physics, Chemistry Maths subjects, and the CDSE (Combined Defense Services Examination) for college graduates. There is also an option of NCC entry which doesn't require any entrance, it is done on qualification in NCC.
- Non- upsc entry:- Direct Entry PC and SSC schemes are usually accompanied by an SSB interview and medical fitness test.Interviewees are shortlisted typically based on their education and percentage scores, Engineering ranks, etc.
