Optometrists are primary health care specialists trained to examine the eyes to detect defects in vision, signs of injury, ocular diseases or abnormality. The doctors of optometry are called optometrists.
The degree in optometry is of undergraduate level and 4 years duration with an internship to be done compulsorily. To get admission in this course the minimum eligibility criteria is that the candidate should have passed 10+2 examination with a recognised board with at least 50% and should have subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics or Biology.
Besides, the selection is based on entrance test conducted by Institution.

Optometry is the undergraduate course with 3 years duration . It has 6 semesters each in six months .It essentially involves an advanced study of the clinical skills involved in professionally measuring eyesight, prescribing corrective lenses, and detecting eye diseases.
It present, there are more than fifty schools of optometry in India. In the year 1958, two schools of optometry were established, one at Gandhi Eye Hospital, Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh and another one at sarojini devi eye hospital Hyderabad in Telangana, under the second five-year plan by Director General of Health Services of Government of India. These schools offered diplomas in optometry courses of two years duration validated by State Medical Faculties.
