The Anti-Defection Law was passed in 1985. It was aimed at putting a stop on the practice of political defections and bring political stability. It also added tenth schedule to the Indian constitution through the 52nd Amendment Act, 1985. According to this law if any elected member gives up its membership of the political party, or abstains from voting where whip was issued, or an independent member joins any political party etc. were some grounds of defections.
