Question : The average weight of a group of 3 people A. B and C is 70 kg. When D joins this group, the average becomes 60 kg. One man E, whose weight is 5 kg more than that of D, replaces A and the average weight of B, C, D, and E now becomes 59 kg. A's weight (in kg) is:
Option 1: 50
Option 2: 40
Option 3: 39
Option 4: 59
Correct Answer: 39
Solution :
Let the weights of A, B, C, D, and E as a, b, c, d, and e respectively.
From the problem,
a + b + c = 210 -------------(1)
a + b + c + d = 240 ----------------(2)
e = d + 5 ------------------------(3)
b + c + d + e = 236 -------------------------(4)
Subtracting equation (1) from equation (2),
⇒ d = 30
Substituting "d = 30" into equation (3),
⇒ e = 35
Substituting d = 30 and e = 35 into equation (4),
⇒ b + c + 30 + 35 = 236
⇒ b + c = 171
Substituting b + c = 171 into equation (1),
⇒ a + 171 = 210
⇒ a = 39
Hence, the correct answer is 39.
