DPT vaccine is given to babies against diphtheria, whooping cough and tetanus. Whooping cough is also known as Pertussis. DPT vaccine was introduced in immunization program of India in 1978. Diphtheria is a bacterial infection caused by  Corynebacterium diphtheriae, which leads to difficulty in breathing. Pertussis is also a breathing illness caused by bacteria and it is a very contiguous disease. Tetanus is a bacterial infection caused by Clostridium tetani. It is also known as lockjaw.
