It was formally known as the High Court of Judicature at Fort William. The first high court in India was established in Calcutta (now Kolkata) in the year 1862 during British rule. After the Sepoy Mutiny in 1857, the power of the British East India Company transferred to the Crown, and the Crown rule started in 1858.
