The first Indian satellite, Aryabhata, was launched on April 19, 1975. Aryabhata is named after the ancient Indian mathematician and astronomer Aryabhata. It was developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). The satellite was launched using a Kosmos-3M launch vehicle from the Soviet Union's Kapustin Yar launch site. Aryabhata was an experimental satellite to conduct scientific aeronomy and solar physics experiments.
