From 1206 onwards, Delhi was the capital of the dynasty known as the Delhi Sultanate. This dynasty was known as the Slave Dynasty. The first ruler of Delhi was Qutbuddin Aybak, a former slave. He rose through the ranks of the army as a general, then as a governor, and finally as the Sultan of Delhi. Iltutmish became the first ruler of Delhi to introduce regular currency and declared Delhi as his capital.
