JET STREAM - These are the relatively narrow bands of strong wind in the upper surfaces of our atmosphere. The winds blow from west to east in jet streams but the flow often shifts to the North and South.
The jet streams are generally found on an Altitude of 20,000 - 50,000 feet. Although jet streams develop where the air masses of different temperatures meet. So, usually surface temperatures determine where the jet Stream will form. Jet streams extend from 20 degrees latitude to the poles in both hemispheres.
Types of jet streams and where they are found are given below:
- Sub Tropical Jet Streams:- at 10-16 km in norther and southern hemisphere.
- Tropical Easterly Jet Streams:- occurs near the tropopause over Southeast Asia, India, and Africa during summer.
- Polar - Night Jet Streams:- at 9-12km in upper stratosphere over the poles.
