Groundwater pollution is caused by the pollutants which leach to the the ground water resources. Like pollutants from industrial waste water, waste water treatment plants, sewers, agricultural runoffs etc. which dissolve in water and reach the underground water resources. They are also known as Leachate. Heavy metals like lead, mercury, cadmium, arsenic, copper etc. are also considered as leachates.
