Solution : Given,
The ratio of the two numbers is 3 : 8 and their sum is 88.
Let the two numbers be $3x$ and $8x$.
So, $3x + 8x = 88$
⇒ $11x = 88$
⇒ $x = 8$
$\therefore$ The smaller number = 3$\times$8 = 24
Hence, the correct answer is 24.
