When there is an abundance of oxygen, the enzyme RuBisCO (Ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase) binds to oxygen rather than carbon dioxide. This sets off a chain of events that result in the emission of carbon dioxide and the use of energy and resources, lowering photosynthetic efficiency.
