Kanishka was a ruler of the Kushan Dynasty who reigned from AD 127 to 150. He assumed the throne in AD 78. This date is used as the starting point of the Shaka calendar era. He initiated the Shaka Era in AD 78. He took over Patliputra and brought the Buddhist monk, Asvaghosa, to Purushpur. Charaka, Sushruta, and others were present at his court.
