To get allotment in a good college do i need a good cgpa along with a good score in GATE ? (for Architecture branch)

Hi,
CGPA is obiviously important in case if a average GATE score but if you have a very good GATE score then if the CGPA is less it is overlooked because GATE score shows the proof that you have a very good knowlege in you field. So, in this case CGPA is not that important but in the first case it is very very important.
