Solution : Given: The sum of the first number and twice the second number is 8, and their difference is 2 Let the two numbers be x and y. x + 2y = 8 ..............................(i) x – y = 2 ...............................(ii) Subtracting equation (ii) from (i) 3y = 6 ⇒y =2 Put y=2 in the equation (ii) x–2=2 ⇒ x=4 x = 4 and y = 2 Hence, the numbers are 4 and 2.
