Here speeds of A and B are 12 km/h and 16 km/h respectively.
They meet after 1 hour and 30 minutes i.e. $1\frac{30}{60}=\frac{3}{2}$ hour.
Now the distance covered by A is = $12×\frac{3}{2}=18$ km.
Also the distance covered by B is = $16×\frac{3}{2}=24$ km.
Therefore, they were (18 + 24) = 42 km away from each other when they started.
Hence, the correct answer is 42.
