Question : Two stations A and B are 230 km apart on a straight line. One train starts from A at 4 a.m. and travels towards B at 40 km/hr. Another train starts from B at 5 a.m. and travels towards A at a speed of 55 km/hr. At what time will they meet?
Option 1: 10 a.m.
Option 2: 7 a.m.
Option 3: 6 a.m.
Option 4: 8 a.m.
Correct Answer: 7 a.m.
Solution :
Let the two trains meet $x$ hours after 4 a.m.
According to the question,
$40x+55(x-1)=230$
⇒ $95x=230+55$
⇒ $95x=285$
⇒ $x=\frac{285}{95}$
⇒ $x=3$
So, they will meet at (4 + 3) = 7 a.m.
Hence, the correct answer is 7 a.m.
