very specifically, if someone has a very good CAT score but not so great b.tech CGPA and a gap after b.tech with no job experience, can one still hope for a seat in a decent mid-ranked b-school?

Hey,
To be very honest you need to score really very high approximately above 99+ percentile in order to even expect a call from old IIMs because of two reasons,
Firstly that you are an engineer and secondly you don't have job right now.
The call given to any candidate is a result of his past academics, work experience, CAT percentile front which a composite score is prepared and students are given call if they met the minimum composite score.
Scoring as high as possible in CAT is your best option to do.
All the very best.
Thank you.
