JEE Main will be organized twice a year with every attempt in Multiple shifts so to avoid any partiality in terms of difficulty of paper of different shifts, NTA will calculate percentile score and based on percentiles scores it will calculate the ranks.
Percentile indicates the percentage of students who scored less than or equal to you. So for each shift percentile score for all subjects and the total percentile score will be calculated termed as NTA score.
A similar process will be followed for the second attempt. Now those who appeared in both attempts best of two NTA score will be considered for Rank calculation and for others all subjects percentile will be considered for the rank calculations. To increase accuracy NTA scores will be calculated to seventh decimal.
You can understand the whole process by the following article.

The following are the methods for JEE Rank Calculation:-
Merit list will be declared at the time of counselling and class 12 marks will not be considered for the Rank calculation. The formula used for calculating JEE Main score is-
JEE Main Score = 4 marks x number of correct answers - number of wrong answers x 1
The actual scores of candidates in JEE MAINS 2019 will be used to calculate the ranks. AIR will be affected directly by the scores obtained in JEE Main i.e. higher the scores, better the rank in Mains. In case, two or more candidates score equal marks, then the tie-breaking rule or inter-se-merit will be applicable.
In case, candidates secure same marks/ score in JEE Main, thentie-break criteria will be applied. Check the application and guidelinesof inter-se-merit for JEE Main Result 2019:
Tie-break criteria BE/B.Tech (other than IITs)
Higher Marks in Mathematics > Higher Marks in Physics > Ratio of Negative and Positive Marks (Higher Absolute Value) > Same Rank
Hope this helps.
