Hi aspirant,

Neuroscience is an in depth study of the structure, behaviour and function of the nervous system through a series of technological tests and experiments. The nervous system comprises of the spinal cord and the brain. Neuroscience was originally studied as a subject under biology but with recent technological advancements and awareness, it now is studied as an individual subject. It is an highly inter-disciplinary course. The course ranges from subjects like biology, physics, chemistry, physiology, anatomy, technology and engineering etc. Certain recent developments in this field are neuroplasticity and computational neuroscience consisting of genetics and imaging. Students can pursue a career in this from various pure science or engineering backgrounds (mainly electrical, computer science and biotechnology).

Candidates aspiring to become Neurologist must possess a 5½ years MBBS degree followed by 2- 3 years MD (Medicine) / DNB course. After attaining the Master's degree candidates have to do D.M. ( Neurology ) to specialize in the field of Neurology .

Scope of Neuroscience:

  • There are a lot many institutes and research centres in India which encourage neuroscientifuc research. However, the probability of getting into these institutes is fairly low because of high population and limited seats.
  • USA, Germany, Australia and UK are places which encourage intensive research in the field of neuroscience. There are multiple opportunities in research fields for students willing to pursue a career in research in the places.
  • The jobs in neuroscience are usually offered in the field education in higher study institutes, research centres and laboratories etc.
  • There are certain industrial jobs also available in companies dealing with biotechnology in neurosciences.
  • There are biomedical institutes which have a high demand of neuroscientists for research and testing of neuroscientific products.
  • In order to enhance your chances at getting better jobs, it is always suggested that you opt for further study in this field. Since it is a research oriented course, you do not tend to learn all parameter involved in research and applications in your undergraduation.
  • There are many institutes, both in India and abroad which offer both undergraduate and postgraduate course in neuroscience.

These are some of the neurology colleges in India:

  • Christian Medical College, Vellore.
  • St Johns Medical College, Bangalore.
  • All India Institute of Medical Sciences New Delhi.
  • Kasturba Medical College, Manipal.
  • MS Ramaiah Medical College, Bangalore.
  • Armed Forces Medical College, Pune.
  • Hamdard Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, New Delhi.
  • Grant Medical College, Mumbai.
  • Indian Institute of Sciences (IISc), Bangalore.
  • Madras University offers an MSc in Neuroscience , Chennai.
  • National Brain Research Centre (NBRC), Haryana.
  • Jiwaji University, Gwalior.
  • IIT Gandhinagar.
  • NIMHANS, Bangalore.
  • Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research, Chennai.
