Options after GATE exam:

1. If you have decent GATE score, apply for MTech/MS in IITs, IIITs, NITs, BITS etc.

2. If your GATE score is low but you are firm on doing MTech/MS from a reputed institute, then in the mean while, you can work as a "Project Associate" with such institute's professor (if they have such an opening). Just check out their homepages or drop them an email with your CV. This will earn you a coveted recommendation if you have plans for doing higher studies from abroad.

3. Some PSUs like BARC consider GATE score for recruitment.

4. Teach at GATE coaching classes (Part-time or Full-time). They pay very well.

As far as IIT-Madras is concerned, placements of EE branch is decent. Both BTech as well as MTech have equal opportunities (except few companies which only hire BTech). In the worst case, if you didn't get any job offer, you can always become a lecturer in Engineering College. Usually, colleges are eagar to hire faculty who has done PG from a reputed institute.

To my knowledge, GATE score is of no use if you are doing anything other than what is mentioned above. Many people earn decent salary without doing any post graduation. It all depends on you!

Hi student,

The options available after gate are:

  • You can get into some good PSUs if your score is in their cutoff range.
  • You can join a college for post graduation (M.Tech.). The college can be chosen based on the gate score.
  • You can go into the research field or teaching profession or work in Research & Development organizations, by doing a PhD after M.Tech in the area of your interest.
  • Now a days M.tech qualification is not required in order to be eligible for PhD, if you have a B.tech degree then also you can go for PhD.
  • For recruitment in state electricity boards, you have to apply with your GATE registration number on their respective websites.
  • You can go for a MS abroad. There are some universities which consider GATE score for admission of Indian Students.

Hope it helps.

Good luck.
