Hello Aspirant

Civil Engineering deals with the various aspects of planning designing, construction, maintenance and modification of physical structure and naturally built environment. This is a vast discipline which includes a lot of things under it such as structural engineering, environmental engineering, geotechnical engineering and more.

There has always been a demand for civil engineers. They are needed for the growth of the infrastructure and of the economy. There are many job prospects for civil engineers, such as

  • Bridge design technician
  • Construction engineering technician
  • Structural design technologist
  • Supervisor, architectural and engineering technologists and technicians
  • Materials testing technologist
  • Environmental technician
  • land use technician
  • Technician, civil engineering
  • Technician, road traffic
  • Urban planning technician

All the IITs in the country offer courses in civil engineering.

From the prospect of job and employability, the individual should be well-versed with the following (if not all, then at least one) -

  • 2D  - 3D Modeling

The concept of preparing reinforcement detailing, drawing elevation and plans using a drafting software. For this purpose, mostly Auto Cad is used by civil engineers.

  • Architectural Modeling

There is a significant rise in the market for MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing) drawings and also the 3D Modeling of Structures. for this, Revit Architecture is mostly used. Individuals capable of understanding Revit Architecture have an edge over others.

  • Surveying Skills

Survey is an important component of any project and skills of surveying are considered very beneficial, especially in the infrastructure domain. For this, either Auto Level or Total Station are preferred. Knowledge of these is an attraction for the employer.

  • Structural Design

There is much software available for this. This is a rather simple and basic skill compared to other skills. Software such as ETABS and STAAD PRO are often used for this.

  • Estimation

This is an additional skill that is often beneficial as this comes handy for both the employer and the employee. The Microsoft Office Suite is the set of software often used for this purpose. It is used for all the balance-sheets, designing and other structural requirements.

  • Project Planning

This is again a practical skill and is very helpful. Software such as Microsoft Project or Primavera is used for project planning.

  • Urban Society Development

This is one area that is rising rapidly. A diploma in this area can add a lot of value to your CV.

  • Diplomas related to structural designs and environment

Given the awareness about the environment around the globe, this skill is a bonus to your CV and can be used to grab many opportunities.

There are many ways to learn such skills.

  • You can either join some coaching or training center to learn these skills<

Hey buddy..
After completing your Civil Engineering degree, there are numerous job oriented course you may go for. It depends upon your Interest level. It is better you first get some market knowledge and check how market is behaving and what kind of skills they really are in need to grow fast.

I think if you go for any professional course first and learn as per the market needs then you may have clear understanding of what and why , you are applying for the current job profile , as a fresher you cannot say that I am expert in Structures or I am expert in a particular work because your college has not trained you like as per the construction Industry requirements.

Some of the courses for
civil engineers are mentioned below :-

  • Auto cad : one must know how to prepare reinforcement detailing and to draw elevation and plans using any drafting software preferably Auto cad
  • project planning
  • one should know how to use project planning software like Premeveraor Microsoft Project to prepare schedules and quantity estimations.
  • Plumbing Design Scope :- As water resources are depleting day to day, there is an immediate attention for economical water consumption & recycling, making Public Health Engineering a significant element.

Structural Design Courses:-

  • PHE Courses
  • Construction Planning Management Courses
  • Green Building Courses

i hope this helps.
