what are the advantage of getting good marks in class 12 board examination (as lakhs of students get)...well do they end up in a good college in India based on their board marks only or they need to apply for other exams too?!

It all depends on what career you're opting for. If you want to pursue some medical courses like MBBS, BAMS, BHMS, BPT, BVSC then you need the qualifying marks in 12th board exams which is around 60% marks only. And the exam that will decide your admission will be only NEET entrance exam. If you want to choose Engineering, then CET, JEE exams decide your future. And similarly, if you want to opt for BSC courses, then surely 12th boards marks will help you.

Then you need to score above 60% marks in your board examination and above 75 in each of the three main subjects ie Physics Chemistry Maths. And your admission will depend on the marks you score in the competitive exams of JEE MAINS, JEE ADVANCE, CET, BITS, etc.
