what are the benefits of doing MSc from IIT and what is the difference in placement option of a MSc chemistry student who did MSc chemistry from IIT or the one who did the same from university.
Let me put it simple words, Incase you are planning a career in Research or Academia or perhaps plan to move abroad for a PhD, IITs are the best Destination for M.Sc in Chemistry. With excellent infrastructure, faculty as well as research facilities and funded projects, you get a great ecosystem of students preparing for a career in Professional Research. Secondly, most of the IITs have Integrated PhD (5Years, M.Sc+PhD) Courses, which even help you save nearly 2 years compared to a General M.Sc (2Yr)+PhD(5Years). You even get a great competitive culture to prepare for GATE (PSUs) as well as Examinations for Research Organizations like BARC, besides getting to work as a Research Assistant/ Teaching Assistant with a stipend for the 2 years of M.Sc.
However, if you plan to pursue a MBA/B.Ed in Future or prepare for Government Examinations like UPSC CSE, SSC CGL, Railways, SBI PO, State Administrative Exams and other Examinations, you may consider Public Universities over IITs for M.Sc. your Workload is somewhat lower, and you get time to prepare for the Examinations.
However, Placements in IITs are mostly around B.Tech/Dual Degree/M.Tech Students. However, M.Sc. Chemistry students do have some scope as a Faculty with Reputed Coaching Institutes recruiting from IITs as well as Many Chemical/Pharma Firms. M.Sc. Chemistry Postgraduate even have Great Off Campus Opportunities with Companies like Unilever, Piramal, Dr Reddys, Sun Pharma and many others. Many students move to PSUs and Research Organizations like DRDO, BARC, IOCL, ONGC, NML as well as ISRO, subject to Vacancies, with each year.
