Don't Miss: Best Online MBA courses by Top Universities
I am very hesitant to draw out a pecking order of the best in any category as I believe in best fitment than just the ‘Best’. This is also a question that is often asked by students who are unsure of the way forward, especially when the scores/ranks/percentiles rule out the IIM option. As I have said many times, the best B-School in a generic way need not be the best fit B-School for you. It is important for each of you to first draw your own career goals and objectives of what you wish to achieve from your MBA college. You may want to pursue entrepreneurship, join family business, work in a great company, work in the social sector or dream of settling down abroad. Besides, the domain also matters – HR, Finance, Marketing, Analytics etc. And the best B-School also has to be your best fit for the merit you scored and the financial ability to pay the fees. However, as you have asked the question, I am responding to this one.
I look at two rankings to shortlist the B-Schools. The first one is National Institutional Ranking Framework (https://www.nirfindia.org/Home) (NIRF). This ranking is done by the Ministry of education every year. It is very credible and more and more institutions are participating in this ranking. It rates MBA Colleges on four parameters:
i) Teaching and learning resources
ii) Research, publications and patents
iii) Graduation outcome (essentially placements)
iv) Outreach and inclusivity ( https://www.nirfindia.org/ scholarships, diversity etc.)
The other ranking, I would advise you to look at is the Careers360 ranking . It follows the input, Process, Output methodology and ensures data accuracy and least weightage to any perception parameters. Each of these are further sub-divided to give correct weightage to student quality, faculty quality, faculty-student ratios, median salary etc.
Based on these two rankings, I would list out the following as the best MBA colleges for Mumbai/Pune/Nagpur with their All India Rank and total score out of 100:

However, I will also add the following B-Schools that have delivered consistently but haven’t been ranked by NIRF. This may be because the institutions chose not to participate or one of the parameters beats them down so badly that they lose out. They are:
Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies : In my view, it is the best MBA College in Mumbai. Entry is extremely difficult but if you get in, your life is set. The brightest and the best of Mumbai CEOs have studied here. It competes with the best IIMs in its placements and graduation outcomes. Careers360 rates it at AAAA+ which is on par with SPJIMR
Tata Institute of Social Sciences : Again, the issue is whether it is a B-School/MBA within the strict definition of what management education is. The students of TISS are placed in the best companies and are most sought after by MNC, FMCG, Banking & Finance Companies and NGOs.
ITM Group of Institutions, Kharghar, Navi Mumbai : These institutions in New Mumbai have been in existence for 30+ years and are known for delivering consistently. Their specializations in Finance and Marketing are well recognized by the industry. Because of the locational advantages, most of the students get placed. Their average salary at placement is about Rs.7 lakh. For the fees that they charge, this is the right fitment for a student who gets about 60 percentile to 80 percentile in CAT/MAT.
Sydenham Institute of Management Studies, Research and Entrepreneurship Education, Mumbai : Again, an MBA with the right legacy and having consistently delivered to its students on learning and placements.
NL Dalmia Institution of Management : A NAAC accredited, AACSB accredited institution, this B-School has also consistently delivered to the students and recruiters. Large companies like HUL, Citi, Tata recruit from this institution.
