What are the career options in government sector such as UPSC after graduation?
Hello
Government service is very fascinating because you are not only building a career for yourself but actually directly contributing to nation building.
The starting point of careers in the govt service is an exam which is conducted by UPSC (Union Public Service Commission).
The minimum eligibility to go for the UPSC exam is to have completed graduation. To go for UPSC, taking humanities stream is a good option because UPSC entrance exam has three components- the preliminary exam, final exam and interview.
The exam is tough to clear but if you have a background in humanities, it will help you as the questions asked in prelims are related to the papers you read in humanities. If you have planned from very beginning to go for civil services and have opted for humanities in graduation it is really good.
Even if you wish to go for UPSC exam after B.Tech or after any other course, you should check the details such as the syllabus about the exam and start preparing.
In prelims and final exams there is one or two papers which you can choose from your area of study. Some subjects are fixed in the syllabus and for some subjects students have a choice depending on the subjects you have studied in graduation.
It is recommended to join a coaching class because they teach you tips and tricks as to how to tackle the questions, how to get enough practice so that you are able to answer more and more questions accurately in a shorter period of time. Similarly, the coaching classes prepare you for this very very challenging panel interview. A panel interview essentially consists of 5-6 people who are interviewing you( a single candidate) and at times, it can be very stressful. So a combination of these three exam related preparation could be possible for you if you join coaching classes.
In case you are fully concentrating on your preparation for civil services and you are not working at all after graduation, it is recommended that you enrol for at least Masters in Arts or Masters in Commerce, the reason is the general preparation and to start to finish for clearing the civil services exam is a period of anywhere between one to two years. So in these years you enrol with a local university and have an opportunity to do your course in arts and commerce then you would have acquired one more qualification in the process and if it takes one or two attempts to clear the civil services exam, you have one more qualification added up your sleeves and that can be very useful to you when you applied for jobs otherwise.
Preparation for UPSC should be a long followed strategy and ensure you devote enough time and energy to the whole process.
