What are the parts of Ruminant stomach ?
Hello Student,
The ruminant stomach is mainly divided in four parts , which are :
- Rumen : Largest part of stomach for churning of food with the help of cornified surface of villi . It also has symbiotic microorganisms which help in fementation of cellulose.
- Reticulum : It is lined by keratinised epithelium
- Omasum : Helps in mechanical churning and grinding of food Also helps in absorption of fluid and electrolytes.
- Abomasum : Secretes gastric juice and shows chemical digestion. it is considered as true stomach of ruminants.
Note : Omasum is absent in camel .
Rumen and reticulum have diverticula or water pockets for temporary food storage.
Ruminant stomachs have four compartments or parts which are listed below : -
- rumen ,
- the reticulum,
- the omasum and
- the abomasum.
Rumen microbes ferment feed and produce volatile fatty acids, which is the cow's main energy source.
Rumen microbes also produce B vitamins, vitamin K and amino acids.
