Hello aspirant!!

Pros

  • You will have a NIT Degree and an NITIAN tagname.
  • You can get in even with a low JEE Mains rank.
  • All the basic perks of studying in a NIT - Techfests, Scholarships etc.
  • Beautiful sceneries in and around the campus and the campus is based on the banks of Dal Lake.
  • You will have some new experiences and great stories to tell.
  • As it's in Kashmir, there's many places to travel and for sightseeing.
  • You don't have to study much to get good grades.
  • Quite a lot of holidays and free time. You will see two or three holidays on average due to strikes per month. And you can't beat 3 months winter vacation and nearly a month of semester break in summer.
  • Placements are quite good. Most of the students from ECE,CS,IT,MECH get placed. Not so much for other branches.

Cons

  • Transportation problem. There's no direct train service to Srinagar. To get to Srinagar, either you have to take a flight or a 10hr road journey from Jammu.
  • Extreme climate. It will get very cold in winter from October.(It can be a pro if you prefer cold climates) Sometimes you’ll observe all the climatic conditions in a single day.
  • Hostile environment. You will see strikes and protests frequently and they sometimes affect your academics and placements. You will see an anti-India sentiment among the locals.
  • Some teachers but not all, bias and give preference to local students. It's increased even more after the protests by students in April. Senior faculty are exception.
  • Infrastructure and faculty are not up to the mark. Labs only have a few working equipment. There are not enough teachers and more than 95% of the staff are locals. Mess food is average. Hostels are mostly okay. College has shown a lot of improvements in infrastructure in the last few months, also construction of a prefab hostel is underway.
  • Kashmir is not always how it's portrayed in the news. College is quite safe and you don't have to worry about safety. But it's not entirely safe either, you can never know when things might go bad outside.
  • As most of the internships are in summer, you are at a loss here as the summer break in NIT Srinagar is at July and only around 20-25 days.
  • Teaching is not at par with other NIT's. You can study for yourself even without attending the lectures. But there's a minimum 75% attendance requirement(which is not that strictly enforced).
  • Because of the connectivity and hostile conditions, some companies refuse to visit NIT Srinagar.
  • Fee used to be a lot less when I joined. But it has been considerably increased now and also there's travelling expenses to add which increases it even more.

These are some pros and cons of joining NIT Srinagar .

Hope this was helpful.

All the best.
