A total of 18000 students appeared for GATE Biotechnology every year. If you get a rank in top 1500, you may find a seat in IITs.

You see the thing about GATE Biotech is that once you get a good rank/score, the job is just half done. You then need to apply in different IITs, after which you are shortlisted for written test/Interview (sometimes both). If you don’t clear the screening test then out you go. Final evaluation is done by giving 80% weightage to GATE score and 20% to test/interviews.

But for IIT-Kharagpur and IIT-Guwahati this was not the case. Top GATE ranks were sufficient to get admit there. So you see this varies a lot, from IIT to IIT, from year to year.

Now you know that getting good GATE score just makes you an Applicant at most IITs. Also different IITs have different cut-offs. My friends and myself have gotten into different IITs and some of them have a score difference of 200 marks!!.

So my advice is try your best to get +45 marks (out of 100) in GATE paper or atleast above 600 GATE score. This will make sure that you get a call from all IITs for screening test.
