see you may go for phd course in Indian university or in abroad university after completing m.tech course in mechanical engineering or relevant discipline. now phd course is research oriented work and takes to complete in 3 to 4 years.

however there is several career options is available like teaching, research engineer, scientist position in reputed government / private organization. the placement is depends on the institute from where you may do your phd.

1. Going for industry jobs
2. Going for academic jobs
3. Going for research jobs in public sector

Industry jobs can give on campus placements  very less companies recruit Phd students .

Academic job there is very easy to get into private college like IIT/NIT .

Going to research in PSU you need to update on job and try to apply more jobs.
