Dear Prakhar,
To get a strong foundation for higher studies like graduation and post-graduation, the decision of choosing a stream after class 10th is very crucial.
The selection of streams depends on keen interest in the subject.
The streams that are available for high school (10 + 1 and 10 + 2) are:
1. Science
2. Commerce
3. Arts
Let me tell you a little bit about each stream so that you can a get a little bit of perspective which will help you to take a decision -
1. Science - This is the most chosen stream for 10+2 grade. This stream offers many fruitful career opportunities including medicine and engineering. In the science stream. There are several options for subjects like mathematics, biology, physics, chemistry, computer science, etc and for languages they are mostly English and Hindi. You can select the subjects that can lead you towards your planned career.
2. Arts - Even though this stream is not as common but it can definitely provide you with some excellent career options. In case you wish to pursue a career in law or a lawyer then Arts is best for you as the subjects will also help you in higher studies. If you are interested in social services, human rights, history, geography then I'd advise you to go for Arts stream. You also can go for courses like mass media and journalism after your 12th.
3. Commerce - This is one stream where if worked hard might lead you to some of the top paid and reputed jobs in India. Some of such highest paying posts are an investment banker, charted accountant, company secretaries, accountants, and financial advisor, etc. The major subjects taught in commerce are economics, accountancy, and business law or study.
Now to arrive at a final decision of stream selection some of the points you should definitely keep in mind are -
1) The first thing to do is to think about a career you would like to pursue.
2) Take a pen and paper and note down the subjects that interest you and you are good at, find your strength and weaknesses.
3) Discuss with your parents, teachers, and counselors, if required talk to your seniors and ask them about their perspective and suggestions for you.
This is a very big decision of your life and it is quite natural to be confused but don’t be afraid of seeking guidance, you can also take help of the career counseling organizations where the counselors help you take a decision.
Apart from the above streams, you can also go for Polytechnic - Sit for POLYCET (Polytechnic Common Entrance Test) or CEEP (Common Entrance Exam for Polytechnic) which gives you an opportunity to go for Diploma Courses. It is a three years course.
If you wish to work right after your 10th you may have to sit for some exams. But my recommendation would be to finish your 10 + 2 first. But the following are some exams -
1) Defense Examinations
a) Indian Army - Indian Army Soldier Clerk's Examination, Indian Army Soldier General Duty Examination (NER), Indian Army Soldier Technical Examination (MER), Indian Army Soldier Nursing Assistant Examination (MER)
b) Indian Air Force - IAF Airman Non-Technical Trade's Examination
c) Indian Navy - Indian Navy Dock Yard Apprentices Examination, Indian Navy Sailors Matric Entry Recruitment Examination, Indian Navy Artificer Apprentices Examination
3) Border Security Force (BSF)
4) Staff Selection Commission (SSC)
The best career selection of one completely depends on their own interest, personal goals, aspirations, skills, passion & priorities in life. Think about your long term goal & see if it aligns with you the career of your choice. The final choice is yours.
Good luck!
