Better if you want to join Merchant Navy then go for Indian Maritime University which conducts it's entrance exam with the name of IMU-CET every year for different programs and you can get good colleges from them.
If you want to do Engineering from NIT then you can go for Mechanical or Electrical brach of Engineering then after doing B.Tech apply as a GME in different companies and they will give you 6 months Pre Sea Training after that you'll join ship as an Engineer.

You can opt for B.E/B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering and after that you can opt for postgraduation (M.E/M.Tech) in Marine Engineering to join merchant navy. You can apply for admission to the B.Tech course from any top NITs. You will have to appear and qualify the JEE Main exam for admission to NITs.
You can also opt for Bachelor's Degree in Marine Engineering. Indian Maritime University conducts entrance exam for admission to the various courses offered by the campuses of the institute.
