Dear Aspirant, Ecocriticism is known for the intimate relationship between literature and the physical environment. Ecocritics have the following function: 1. They re-read major literary works form an ecocentric perspective. They pay particular attention to the representation of the natural world. 2. They extend the applicablility of a range of ecocentric concepts using them of things other than the natural w orld- concepts such as growth and energy, balance and imbalance, symbiosis and mutuality and sustainable or unsustainable uses of energy and resources. 3. They give special canonical emphasis to writers who fore-ground nature as a major part of their subject matter, such as the American transcendalists, the British Romantics, the poetry of John Claire. The work of Thomas Hardy and other such Georgian poets was also analyzed. 4. They extend the range of literary-critical practice by placing an emphasis on relevant factual writing, especially reflective topographical material such as essays and travel writing. 5. They turn away from social constructivism . They instead emphasise ecocentric values of observation, ethical responsibility and the common ecocentric claim of the 'world being beyond ourselves'.
