what do you mean by substitution reaction
Hi
Substitution reaction is a chemical reaction in which one functional group is replaced by another functional group in a chemical compound. Substitution reactions are of prime importance in organic chemistry.
It is also known as single substitution reaction or single displacement reaction. There are two types of substitution reactions i.e nucleophilic and electrophilic.
Organic compounds in which an SP3 hybridized carbon is bonded to an electronegative atom or group can undergo two types of reactions - they can undergo substitution reaction in which the electronegative atom or group is replaced by another atom or group or they can undergo elimination reaction where the electronegative group is eliminated.
In simple words in the reactions in which one functional group is replaced by another functional group are called as substitution reactions.
Substitution reactions are of two types :-
- Electrophilic substitution reaction
- Nucleophilic substitution reaction.
