To add to the other great answers here, you need to be not only fluent in English but also familiar with the various style guides that are used to edit different types of writing. You also need to be able to work with writers in a helpful, noncritical way. A copy editor is responsible for proofreading and revising various forms of marketing content. If you are working on content aimed at an English-speaking audience, then you must be fluent in English to make your client happy.
