The differences are :-
IIT :- Indian Institute of technology, these are the too engineering colleges of the country. The engineers who get graduated from these college are the best in the world. You have to crack jee advance to get into these.
Nit :- National Institute of technology, these are also the too engineering college but are low ranked than the iits. You have to crack jee mains with required rank to get into these.
Others benefits of iit over nits are the festa placement and package etc.
Both are government and top level engineering institutes of India.

NITs take admission through JEE Main rank and IITs take admission through JEE Advanced rank. There are total 31 NITs with approx. 18K seats and 23 IITs (Including ISM) with approx 10500 seats .
