Dear Aspirant,

National Eligibility Test or UGC NET is an exam conducted for aspiring assistant professors and lecturers in colleges and universities around India. This is conducted twice a year in the months of June and December. The candidates who pass the exam with flying colours also get JRF, which is Junior Research Fellowship who wish to continue with research work. So basically the qualifying candidates will be placed into two categories- JRF and Assistant Professorship.

The people who get higher ranks get the NET-JRF and these candidates can apply for PhD. in various institutions. NET is not responsible for getting into them, it is just the qualifying exam to be selected by various universities based on that. Therefore, you will have to go through an interview for the same. If you are interested in lectureship, you are still eligible for that. But you need to keep in mind that candidates who qualify the JRF scale are entitled to a stipend of Rs. 2500 monthly for a duration of two years and after these two years, if the candidate has registered for PhD., JRF can be upgraded to SRF (Senior research fellow) and the stipend then increases to Rs. 28000 for the next year.

Nonetheless, the candidate can apply anywhere as a Lecturer or Assistant Professor in Universities and Colleges in India if they qualify NET. After NET you will anyways be eligible for a salary according to the sixth pay commission rule of the Government of India. There are many other sectors today that are recruiting NET candidates.

Since you are applying for Law, you will also be open to eye-catching PSU jobs. NET is a great step to take after a law degree. Be thorough with the syllabus and keep checking the revisions that are made about the important topics. The paper will be 3 hours with 50 questions in the first paper and 100 questions in the second paper. Here are some of the books which you can refer for preparation-

  • UGC NET General Paper I by M. Gagan and Sajit Kumar
  • Teaching and Research Aptitude by KVS Madaan
  • UGC NET/SLET Law by Pankaj Jaiswal
  • Law UGC NET SLET by Sawlashwa BK

Hope this helps. All the best!
