EWS means economically backward section.

EWS is a category of students who fall under the guidelines of EWS and have a valid certificate like some other categories like sc,obc

General rank is the rank which will given without any consideration of categorized students. And EWS rank is the rank among the EWS students only.

And EWS vs general rank denotes the rank you got ews rank at what general rank .

Example : in 100 students there are 20 EWS students and you are better than 80 studemts overall and in EWS category you are better than ( only if you belong to EWS category) 10 students .

Than your general rank is 19 and EWS rank is 9
