gate stands for graduate aptitude test in engineering, btech pass students or final year bech students or msc final year student or msc passed candidates may apply for gate exam , gate is really important for engineering student if they wish to work in psus or maharatna companies in india, as psus hires candidates based on gate score, also if you want to do mtech after btech or phd in relevant discipline from iits and other prominent institute you need to have gate score on relevant subject. there is no upper age limit for applying in gate exam.

GATE can be though as of the JEE after your graduation. Both have the same goal and that is IIT.
GATE stands for Graduate Aptitude test in Engineering. This test is basically an entrance test for admission to institutes for Post graduation(M.Tech especially). Qualifying in Gate you can crack some of the elite institues such as IITs and NITs, and get admitted to post graduation there. Also GATE has some more value especially if you are applying for PSUs. GATE can be given after you complete your graduation. Also it is for only core branches, however other branch people can also appear for this exam. For more information, kindly refer the below link:
