Greetings,
we fill our college preference list in a particular order based on what college we want to get as against our rank and the seat availability.
Typically people choose the highest rated college with high cut offs as their first preference and then other colleges in a descending order. What this accomplishes is that it balances out your chances of getting into that college with respect to your rank.
So if my rank is 200, supposedly, and my preference list goes like this:
- No. 1 college (cut off rank 80)
- No. 2 college (cut off rank 150)
- No. 3 college (cut off rank 210)
then my chances of getting the 3rd college are almost fully sure.
but if I want a particular college for some reason, say No. 7 college and my rank is 50 (enough to get me the no. 1 college) and my preference list has no. 7 college at the top then no matter how good I may have ranked, I'd automatically get assigned the college which is first in my preference list - i.e. the no. 7 college.
Good day!
