what is laughing gas how it is prepared
Laughing Gas is a name given to Nitrous Oxide, N2O by H.Davy. Nitrous Oxide is named as Dinitrogen Monoxide in IUPAC Nomenclature and is used in recreational activities as an anaesthetic. It is named as Laughing Gas due to a euphoric effect felt upon inhaling it.
Nitrous Oxide or Dinitrogen Monoxide can be prepared industrially by carefully heating Ammonium Nitrate at about 250 C, which then decomposes into Nitrous oxide N2O and water vapour. The reaction occurring can be represented as:-
NH4NO3------(heat)-----> N2O +2 H2O
Hope this helps.
Hello pavan
This a very interesting question with an interesting gas!!
laughing gas is chemically known as nitrous oxide oe simply nitrous. its is an oxide of nitrogen with chemical formula N 2 O. At room temperature it is a colorless non flammable gas. at eleveated temperature it acts as an powerful oxidiser. this gas are mainly used for medical applications to relive pain. It is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WHO_Model_List_of_Essential_Medicines) , the most effective and safe medicines needed in a health system.
Effects produced by laughing gas is
1. it reduces your anxiety
2. it kills pain
3. it creates euphoria where you fell all kind of good things.
Now the question is how is this gas prepared;
This is not something a DIY stuff than you can do at home. you need a laboratory and equipments to prepare this gas.Since it involves high temperature
NH 4 NO 3 (s) → 2 H 2 O (g) + N 2 O (g)
The very first step is that you need to gently heat the ammonia nitrate from
170C to 280C. Because higher temperatures might cause the ammonium nitrate
to detonate .
the next step is to cool the hot gas to condense the water.
The best way to do this is by using a pneumatic trough, which involves a tube
leading from the ammonium nitrate container that bubbles the gases up through water into a collection jar. You want the rate of gas production to be a bubble or two per second. The pneumatic trough removes the water from the reaction as well as smoke from impurities in the ammonium nitrate.
The gas in the collection jar is your nitrous oxide.
HOPE IT HELPS!!
Hello,
Laughing Gas is a common name for the Nitrous Oxide ( N2O ) compound. The procedure for producing Laughing Gas is given below:
- Nitrous oxide is prepared from the nitrate of ammonia. The salt used in the process should not contain any hydrochlorate of ammonia.
- It is formed by adding pounded carbonate of ammonia to pure nitric acid, which if concentrated may be previously diluted.
- The solution is concentrated till its boiling point begins to rise above 250 o C and a drop of its becomes solid on a cool glass plate.
- To obtain nitrous oxide a quantity of salt is introduced into a retort and heated by a charcoal choffer.
- At a temperature not under 340 o C the salt boils and begins to undergo decomposition being resolved into nitrous oxide and water.
- Nitrous oxide is collected in a gasometer or in a gas holder filled with water of temperature about 90 o C as cold water absorbs much of this gas.
- The whole salt undergoes the same decomposition and nothing whatever is left in the retort.
- Nitrous oxide is likewise produced when the salt called nitrogen sulphate of ammonia is thrown into acid and also when dissolved in dilute nitric acid.
Best Wishes
Hi Pavan.
Laughing Gas is a gas called Nitrous oxide. Its formula is N2O. To prepare N2O, ammonium nitrate is heated at about 250 degree Celsius, which decomposes into nitrous oxide and water vapour. To make a purer gas at lower temperatures, Phosphate salts can be added as a catalyst.
Equation : NHNO --(Δ)--> NO + 2 HO
