What is main quality of IIT ? Why so many people try to become an IITian ? Is this better than CIVIL SERVICES ?
Iit and civil services are two different things. The former provide you with graduation degree and the latter provide you with government job.
A very clear thing is there :
Have you ever seen any IAS Officer trying to obtain a degree of MBA from IIM or any top university after becoming an IAS ?
I have seen lots of IITian and IIMian preparing for Civil Service Examination even after getting placements atvery highpackages from their campus and doing job in that particular MNC .
Once you are in IIT, you can always earn well and maintain your tag as an IIT Engineer. But to become an IAS officer, you will have to prepare for the exam, take risks with your career. And even if you clear, the professional life is going to be very challenging.
Cheers !!
For Civil Services, you need to be a graduate in any discipline which can also be BTech/Engineering. Civil Services Exam is conducted by the Union Public Services Commission for recruitment to various Civil Services of the Govt. of India including the IAS, IPS, IFS among others.
There are many IITians who have opted for Civil Services as it gives them a chance to serve the nation, if that is where ones interest lies.
So to summarize, you need a degree like a BSc, BA, BCom, BTect (form IIT or any other recognised university/Institute) etc to appear for Civil Services Examination
Please do read UPSE CSE for full details.
IIT's and CIVIL SERVICES are tottaly two diffrent steams that cannot be compared. IIT's are the most primer institutes of the Indian education system which produce the best scholars every year as you can take examples of Sundar Pichai Ceo of Google. Apart from this many IITians have cleared the Civil Services examination and earned fame in their jobs ex. Kiran bedi.

Hello V.K, There is nothing better than Civil Services... People demands IIT because it provides good package + Job in foreign nation thats all... whereas CS (Civil service) though it don't give that much package but gives alot reputation + is indian's toughest exam... and after months of preparation, there is no surety of clearing exam... so, thats all
IIT in todays scenario is just pursued by people due to its name tag. no doubt that the finest engineers get admission in IITs, nowadays even after graduating from IITs people are not landing with any jobs and hav to take up small jobs to support their families. it is highly respectable and requires a lot of knowledge. whereas civil services is the highest cadre in the government and cannot be compared o any other job. alongwith permanenet job security, it gives a status, honour and a good lifestyle. its not easy to crack civil services, but once cracked, it does make life easy. choice is yours. depends on your needs and your passion. goodluck!
