Hello Harsha

It's a 4 year course like any other engineering branch. You might not excel in all the department's but you are taught every aspect of engineering.

In short, a Marine engineer is a jack of all trades but a master of none. The syllabus includes mathematics, mechanics of machines, strength of materials, computer science, electronics, electrical, thermodynamics, engines, renewable sources of energy, maritime law. Now,you know why I said a Marine engineer is a jack of all trades but a master of none.

Now, before getting into the marine industry you need to understand what a Mariner's life is.

Let's divide that into two categories.

Perks of being a Marine engineer.

You get to see the world and that too without paying an extra penny from your pocket.

You get to work with people from different countries which is an experience which will surely enrich your profile.

In case you are a foodie, you will like this profession to the core.

It gives you ample amount of time to spend with your family. You can plan your holidays as per your wish and you don't need to answer anybody for that.

In case you need a capital to start your own business, trust me you have had hit the G-spot. The salary is handsome and all you need to do is to plan and spend wisely.

If you don't want a 9 to 5 desk job, this must be exciting for you because it includes troubleshooting which enables you to identify yourself and your problem solving skills in real crunch situations.

Disadvantages of being a Marine engineer

The biggest of all is the lack of connectivity. Not all the ships are equipped with internet facilities. And I guess, you must be knowing the value of internet now a days.

At times, when you are at sea and there is an emergency/occasion in your family, you might not be able to get a sign-off.

The working environment is not air-conditioned. You have to work in a temperature more than 40 degree Celsius. In most ships, the noise is greater than 100 dB(A), and can sometimes be as high as 110 dB(A).

It is not a good idea to go for Marine engineering if you suffer from homesickness and cannot handle yourself in emergencies. You have to be on your toes all the time even if you are not working.
