Rheostat is an electrical device or instrument  which is  used to control a current by varying the resistance.It is  mostly made up of wire wound. Hence, rheostats are also sometimes referred as variable wire wound resistors.

It is used to adjust generator characteristics, dim lights, and start or control the speed of motors.
