What is naval architecture and information about Marine engineering salary and jobs
The proper term for this profession is “Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering”.
A naval architect is the engineer who deals with all the details of the ship design, construction and surveying. Some of the tasks a N.A. has to undertake: the detail design of the hull, hydrostatics and hydrodynamics, the manufacturing processes and all the necessary equipment. Note, that a naval architect designs not only ships and vessels but also offshore and floating structures.
Marine engineering has many similarities with the “classical” mechanical engineering, but it is specialised for ships. M.E.’s deal with the main and auxiliary machinery (main engine, pumps, generators, the shafting and propulsion system e.t.c. ) and electrical systems, of a vessel.
Most of the universities offer Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering as a MSc after Mechanical Engineering but some offer it as a full degree, independent from Mechanical Engineering, and the degree usually combines BOTH naval architecture and marine engineering. Moreover, such degrees may offer courses about basic maritime economics.
