In any state medical counselling procedures or prospectus the term 'open category' is used for unreserved category  (UR) candidates or General category  (gen.) candidates .

So, of you belongs to unreserved category then you have to opt for this open-category option.

Open Category in Tamil Nadu means a Forward category or General Class who do not qualify for any reservation benefits. Some castes that come under open category in Tamil Nadu are Iyengar,Iyer,Saiva vellalar, Karkatha vellalar,Reddy,Vellalr,Naidu,Brahmin,Balija,Komati,Kamma.

UR open category means nothing but simply unreserved or general category. similarly, sc open , st open, pwd open categories mean sc, st and pwd categories only. no need to worry about these.
