Light energy is absorbed by chlorophyll, a photosynthetic pigment of the plant, while air containing carbon dioxide and oxygen enters the plant through the leaf stomata.

These protons return through ATP synthase to produce ATP. Light reactions take place on the thylakoid membranes.
