Hello Nitish,

To become an officer in the Central Bureau of Investigation ( CBI ) is a dream of many youths in India. Two different agencies conduct examinations to fill vacancies in CBI. They are ; UPSC and SSC.

  • To become a group A officer in CBI, you must choose Civil Service Examination conducted by UPSC and become an IPS officer.
  • To join as Sub Inspector in CBI, you must go through SSC CGL examination : To become a Sub Inspector in Central Bureau Of Investigation (CBI ), you must pass the SSC Combined Graduate Level Exam. There are four stages in the Combined Graduate Level Examination (CGL ) conducted by Staff Selection Commission (SSC). Only after the successful completion of all 4 stages, you can join as Sub Inspector in CBI.

CBI Sub Inspector Eligibility Criteria : To become a CBI Officer by passing SSC CGL examination, you must the have following qualifications :

Educational Qualification -

  • Must have a Bachelor's Degree from a Recognized University (The candidates appearing in the final year of their graduation can also apply, however they must possess Essential qualification on or before 01-August of the year of notification) .

Age Limit -

  • 20-30 for General Category
  • 20-33 years for OBC Category
  • 20-35 for SC/ST Category.

Now, if you want to talk about the power then let me tell you one thing clearly, 'The Designation and post does not make one powerful. But the zeal of the person, absolute integrity to the core and desire to serve others makes one so'. Though  IPS officers are indeed the most powerful officers in the country. They head CBI, CID and all police organizations dealing with crimes of any type. All the State and Central Police Organizations are headed by IPS officers who arrest and prosecute. And so the proverb says, “Political power grows out of the barrel of a gun.” In Hindi also it is said, “One who bears the stick, have the buffalo". ( Jiski Lathi Uski Bhains).

Sub inspector of CBI have limited powers of investigation of only those cases which are related to central government and which are economic and fraud in nature. They mostly deal with corruption cases of central government employees. Sub inspector of CBI cannot register an FIR himself. He can only do investigation when directed by his SP. He has the powers to arrest the accused in these cases.

Hope this helps!!
