what is Raney Nickel? and one example...
Hi,
Rany nickel is a compound of alluminum and nickel. It is used as a catalyst in many reaction. It is also used as reagent. The most common use is in hydrogenation reaction. Some time it is represented Ni-Al on the reaction arrow.
Hey,
Raney nickel is a substance made up of nickel or rather an alloy of nickel and aluminium which is a very strong catalyst and is used as a reagent for many hydrogenation reactions.
This type of nickel is also called as skeletal catalyst sometimes.
It can be used as a catalyst in a number of reactions like hydrogenation of benzene into cyclohexane or in desulfurization of thioacetal.
I hope this helps.
All the best!
- Raney nickel is a solid catalyst which is composed of fine grains of a nickel -aluminium alloy.
- Raney nickel is used in many industrial processes it
- Raney nickel is produced when a block of nickel -aluminium alloy is treated with concentrated sodium hydroxide.
Example of use of Raney nickel :- In industry it is used when benzene is reduced to cyclohexane.
Thankyou
